Marufuku Ramen in San Francisco’s Japantown is a solid choice for anyone craving a focused, sit-down ramen experience where the broth and noodles take center stage. This is a restaurant built around delivering authentic Hakata-style ramen—rich, pork-based broths paired with thin noodles that you can order extra of (kaedama) if you’re extra hungry. The atmosphere is straightforward and casual, suited for small groups or solo diners who want to dive into a warm bowl without fuss.

The space has recently expanded by taking over the next-door spot, which noticeably eases what used to be long waits. Weekday afternoons or early evenings present the smoothest seating, often without delay, allowing you to settle in without the hassle of typical weekend lines. The service is frequently highlighted as friendly and attentive, with staff willing to guide newcomers through the menu, especially if you’re uncertain which broth or toppings to try.

Popular picks include the Hakata Tonkotsu DX, which layers traditional toppings with tender braised pork belly, a perfectly soft-boiled egg, and fresh green onions. The soups strike a balance between being rich and approachable, and the portion sizes, despite smaller bowls, tend to be filling thanks to the dense broth and hearty ingredients. Alongside ramen, the menu offers dishes like chicken karaage, gyoza, and takoyaki, which fit well as quick-to-share plates or snacks while waiting for your noodles.

Marufuku’s setting is relaxed but not overly atmospheric—more a practical spot focused on efficient, quality ramen over ambient flourishes. This makes it a go-to for casual dinners, especially for folks wandering Japantown or grabbing a late lunch. The moderate pricing also means you can try extras like the chashu buns or a side of fried shishito peppers without breaking the bank.

For visitors who dislike long waits, arriving early or during weekday off-peak hours is the best bet. Weekends and holidays tend to draw bigger crowds, with lines forming quickly, though the expanded space has helped reduce this congestion. Overall, Marufuku appeals mostly to ramen fans who appreciate a broth-driven bowl and responsive, helpful service without the distractions of overly trendy décor or forced conviviality.

They’ve expanded the restaurant and took over the space next door. Basically there’s no waiting like it used to be. We were there around 1:30 pm on a Monday and was immediately seated (for two)! No waiting at all. Service was friendly and very very quick! Probably about 4-5 minutes after our order we got our food which was deceptively served in small bowls. But there was a lot of food and noodles. The broth was sublime as expected, the noodles perfectly al dente (small thin) with really tender pieces of pork. It was delicious and service was excellent but it was sooo noisy inside? It was hard to talk but for this incredible ramen, it’s worth it!!

I’ve heard about this place for a while and finally had the unexpected opportunity on Christmas Eve. A friend and I decided to meet at Japantown for dinner. We walked around and I remembered this place. We decided to eat here. We didn’t even have to wait 5 mins and we were called to our table! Our waitress was SO nice! She was above & beyond! Gave us recommendations and answered our questions; and staff was so attentive! I ordered the vegan creamy broth ramen. It was good; however, I liked Hinodeya’s better as theirs was more creamy and I liked the taste better. Marufuku’s was still good though. My friend had the Hankata Tonkatsu DX (The DX just means it has extra toppings). Apparently, this is one of the popular dishes. He said it was really good. We both finished our ramen so highly recommend. We ordered the chicken Karaage as well. I have to say this was SO good!!! For those wondering, I know I ordered the vegan ramen but it’s because I don’t eat that much meat (obviously not 100% vegan or vegetarian). Street parking can be tough but you if you’re lucky, you can find free residential parking or metered parking. Otherwise, there is an underground paid parking garage. If you take public transportation, the 38-Geary or 22-Fillmore (you’ll have to walk a few blocks, not bad as there’s plenty of shops & restaurants along the way). I highly recommend this place!

Food 8/10 Service 10/10 Waiting time 1/10 2h wait for a okay ramen is beyond absurd. Ramen is really good but would never go back to that wait line. I would recommend if you can get there before opening. Otherwise there are plenty of better options

One of the best ramen I’ve ever had! First of all, the server was very kind and informative. It was busy but she took her time to explain what is in each item. I’m glad I went with her recommendation, Hakata Tonkotsu DX. The broth was divine. The meat was so juicy and tender. The egg was boiled to perfection (jammy). Please give this place a try!

Delicious Ramen spot. I had the classic Tonkotsu Ramen. Good size, flavorful thick broth. It also comes with an egg which was perfectly cooked. Would definitely come back again. Expect a wait time on the weekend about 30 min.

Marufuku Ramen SF absolutely delivers! The tonkotsu broth is rich and silky, the noodles have that perfect bite, and the chashu melts in your mouth. Even when the place is busy, the staff is friendly and efficient, making the whole experience smooth and enjoyable. The karaage chicken is a must‑order side, and portions are generous enough to leave you satisfied but wanting to come back. Easily one of the better ramen spots in San Francisco!

Marufuku Ramen is located on the second floor of the western portion of the Japan Center (officially “Japanese Cultural and Trade Center”) also known as Kinokuniya Mall which is named after a major Japanese bookstore 紀伊國屋 chain founded in 1927 along the adjacent Kabuki-Sundance Theater on 1737 Post in between Webster and Fillmore streets.[* The eastern portion of the Japan Center, the Kintetsu and Miyako Mall buildings with destinations to Daiso Japan, Benihana, Osakaya, Nijiya Market, etc. are also located on Post near the Peace Plaza between Laguana and Webster streets. Kintetsu Enterprises of America was the center’s key anchor owning and managing the Miyako Hotel and Kintetsu and Miyako Malls. Kintetsu Enterprises is said to be owned by the Kinki Nippon Railway that operated the largest private railway in Japan, which was founded in 1944 and based in Osaka, Japan.] The Dashi qualities of its variety such as tonkotsu, miso, paitan, shoyu or tantan ramen, are quite above average and really tasty. The ramen noodles are really good not too soft too hard or too thin but Chasu is little too salty probably due to marinated in too much soy sauce and too long. Other ingredients including kikurage shiitake (wood ear black mushrooms), bamboo shoots, bean sprouts, pickled red ginger, nori seaweeds (dried and thin sheets), scallions, sweet corn, and you know what, the seasoned soft boiled egg are not only delicious but also included in the original price tag. By far this is one of the BEST Japanese Ramen shop in The City. {Will revisit Yamadaya Ramen another well-reviewed place in Japantown in a few days and do a candid review by comparison. } PS The kanji for "Marufuku" (丸福) meaning (the “circle of good fortune”), combine 丸 (“maru”), meaning "circle," a drawing of a person tossing around while sleeping; and 福 (“fuku”), meaning “blessing” or "good fortune," stands for praying or worshiping. This combination, literally meaning "circle of good fortune. Muni Bus line 38 (“Geary”), 38R (“Geary Rapid” means few stops) stops on Laguna or Fillmore. 22 (“Fillmore”) stops at Fillmore and Post and 2 (“Sutter”) stops at Post/Laguna.

Upscale, very busy ramen spot with classic options and inventive specialities, boasting handmade fare. I prefer the thicker egg noddles served with the spicy (ground) chicken ramen compared to the thinner noodles in the standard chicken (breast) ramen. The broth is rich and creamy. The kid's plate comes with noodles, fries, veggies and karage. They offer Sapporro on tap and Asahi in bottles, and also have fun Japanese inspired lemonades like the Sakura lemonade.
